Ecstasy Linked to Decline in Verbal Memory

Low doses of the popular recreational drug Ecstasy can lead to an inability to learn and remember words, according to a report published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

Ecstasy is an illegal recreational mind-altering drug, popular among young people and associated with the “rave” culture. Past research has suggested that the drug can damage nerve cells in the brain that respond to serotonin, a hormone which in involved in mood, thinking, learning, and memory.

To investigate the effect of Ecstasy on verbal memory, researchers in the Netherlands studied 58 individuals who planned to initiate Ecstasy use and compared them to 60 non-users of the same age, sex, and intelligence score.

The participants were originally assessed before beginning the use of Ecstasy, and the evaluation was repeated after 3 years. All of the participants underwent tests that measured memory, including attention, verbal memory for words and language, and visual memory for images. Verbal memory was tested by memorizing a series of 15 words and repeating them immediately, and then again 20 minutes later.

At the beginning of the study, there were no significant differences in scores between the two groups. However, at the follow-up evaluation, verbal recall and verbal recognition scores were significantly lower in the Ecstasy users. There were no differences between the drug’s effect on men and women, and the test scores remained within the normal limits of the general population.

Since Ecstasy appears to only influence verbal memory, it is thought that it may affect specific areas and chemicals in the brain. The main underlying factor could be a depletion of serotonin, which may or may not be reversible. Further research is needed to assess the long-term effects of the drug and how it acts on the brain as it ages.
